This was a breath of fresh air in the years best films. A throwback to the 1950s, we are engaged with the story of a new immigrant to this country and watch as she learns about the great sacrifices one had to make when moving to the United States. Not only is this a love story, it is a celebration of individuality and the importance of family. Highly entertaining was the interaction between the two who are destined become one. It was wonderful seeing the heroine respond the qualities of her own family and compare them to the one (her hero) and how his family responds. That said, the two main characters are highly engaging and quite believable. The supporting characters ring true, but the time fleshing them out is done too quickly for the viewer to really invest their time into them. Though they are not cardboard by any means, but rather they appear to either be stereotypes or just window dressing for the rest of the story, I would have liked to have seen more engaging scenes with the lead male's family. This would made for a wonderful counter balance. None the less, this is a wonderful period piece that reminds us that or families and our cultures shape us, but it us that brew insides us that makes us an AmericanRead full review

Saoirse Ronan richly deserved her Academy Award nomination for her touching portrayal of a young Irish immigrant in 1950's New York. The best part of the film is the cast of characters( with one significant exception) who are good people helping one another and even sacrificing themselves for love. This can be the story of any immigrant and in this incarnation one that will leave your heart full of joy.

One of my very favorite movies...ever! I purchased it so I could watch it as often as I wished....which is quite often. If you would enjoy a romantic story set in 1950s Ireland and New York, then this is the movie for you. Amazing acting, interesting characters, beautiful scenery...who could ask for anything more?

A film filled with woderment , homesickness , boarding house for Irish women all helping the new girl get acclimated to life in Brooklyn....her being helped by the Parrish Priest...meeting an Italian man at a dance...walks her home...they fall in love...marry in secret....then her sister in Ireland dies and she returns to help her Mom...an Irish man courts her as he in innocence thinks she is a single girl..however her heart belongs to her husband and she leaves her village and Mother and evil gossip and returns to Brooklyn. A very sweet compelling film....it will be a sleeper as our society seems to only want blood and gore as well as stupid car chases....I compare this film to "Second Hand Lions" which is also a great film ..but hardly anyone I know has even heard of it.....and another Irish gem is "The Secret of Roan Innish" again a sleeper but another treasure.Read full review
